Learning To Use The Gradient Tool - Experiment
On my final piece i plan to use a gradient, which allows me to fade my image into one solid colour, i want to use this on a monochromatic colour scheme, so i can use the solid colour to put type on. |
after using the settingsi drew my gradient onto a new layer. When i first did it the gradient didn't quite reach the picture. |
I then used the transform tool to move and stretch the gradient up and down as needed, once i did this i pressed enter and the gradient and the picture were finished. |
This is what my final gradient should look like when i make my final poster. |

Polaroid Camera - Experiment
In my final piece i plan to use some sort of polaroid picture, although I'm not sure what of yet. As using a polaroid is different to using a digital camera i experimented with how it worked. |
I experimented with different angles and also how bright the flash was, mainly depending on how close i was to the camera. The one with the 'green scribble' is one i plan to use in my final poster. |
Further Drafting
I have drafted two other scamps further, this includes one similar to my emulation style and the other one which i prefer, which includes photography and technology which is captured in a photograph itself. These two will mainly follow a monochromatic colour scheme.
Type Choices - Own
I have created my own type. I firstly put my ideas down on to paper and then refined them. After this I scanned my chosen type on to the computer, and then edited it on photoshop. I have chosen to create a serif type which is similar to the typeface the band use in their logo.
The top type is the actual band logo, the type below is mine, in a very similar style which i think still works as it is clear and simple to read. |

Type Choices - Digital
I have chosen a range of digital types that I like which will possibly be used on my final tour poster. My favourite type on is the top left as it looks worn and very hand made - a key characteristic of a display type, but it is still legible. Other typefaces i like include the bottom serif type and although it hasn't got a big weight, it still catches the eye. The fourth sans serif type is very simple and subtle and also looks modern and fresh which is why i like it. The top of the 'other' display types is also very simple as its serif but has an element of being 'coloured in'.
Type Moodboard
I have created a moodboard based on You Me At Six to design type for my gig poster. This includes photos of the band, quotes, type used in the quote, other themed images such as fireworks, You Me At Six inspired tattoos and other rock/punk/alternative images.

Emulation - Marcus Walters
I have created my own work inspired by Marcus Walters who created the screen print style in the post below. |
I firstly drew out the design and then scanned it into the computer and took it into photoshop. |
After that i changed the threshold, which made the black elements on my page a slid black. |
After this I started to colour all the different elements. |
I then took it into a new document and started to place them together. |
I then added another layer and multiplied it so create a different colour when it 2 colours meet. |
I then added the final layer and multiplied that to create the final effect. |
I then added a black background to it and changed the colours slightly to make it look the most effective. |

Artist Copy - Marcus Walters
I took my drawings into photoshop and then changed the threshold and took away the background. |
I used the shortcut (shift, command, backspace) to choose a colour to make my drawings. |
I then changed this one to blue and did this to the other two layers and made them pink and yellow. |
I then coloured the background layer and started building it up. |
By multiplying the layers when they are stacked it mixes the colours together e.g. pink and blue now makes purple where they are layered on each other. |
Once I had finished layering all of them i tried to get the exact colours used on his print, so i compared mine (left) to Marcus Walters original (right). |
This is my final copy of Marcus Walters' 'Eat Cake'. |

Scamps
I have scamped some potential ideas for my final gig poster. They were drawn quickly and were a few of the first ideas that came into my head.

Annotated Lyrics
I have taken lyrics from three songs by You Me At Six, one off each album. I then annotated and highlighted the key lyrics that create images in my head. These ideas can then be used when designing my final poster. Some ideas that have come from the lyrics is the theme of being young 'toys' and being played and the theme of being 'married to the music'. There is also a theme of being young and living (and making bad decisions) throughout all three.

The Brief
Music promoters have approached me to design and make a tour/gig poster for the rock band You Me At Six. This is to support their album first album Take Off Your Colours which was released in 2007. The gig poster must include the theme of relationships.
